Market Manager Highlight – Emily Fons

Written by Theresa Hunt

  1. When did you become the Regional Farmers Market Coordinator for southeast Wisconsin and what led to this role?

I became the Regional Farmers Market Coordinator after the COVID-19 pandemic impacted my career as a professional musician. With live music performances no longer an option, I looked for new ways to support my community and found a project manager position opening that involved coordinating farmers markets. The job aligned with my desire to make a positive impact. Living in Milwaukee, I was assigned to the southeast region, and I’ve found the work to be deeply fulfilling, as I can see the difference we’re making in local communities firsthand.

  1. What are your day to day responsibilities?

In my role as a project manager I work closely with market managers to ensure effective data collection. One of our recent initiatives was the “Taste It Tent,” inspired by the Oak Creek market, where vendors provide samples and interact with visitors. This initiative has been a huge success, with 9,184 samples distributed this year alone. We’re excited to see other regions showing interest in implementing similar programs.

  1. Can you explain what the Southeast Wisconsin Farmers Market Collaborative is and why you wanted to get involved in it?

The Southeast Wisconsin Farmers Market Collaborative was created to strengthen local communities and improve the operation of farmers markets in the region. It helps create meaningful progress by supporting agricultural initiatives and promoting healthy lifestyles. I was drawn to this collaboration because it allows us to build strong connections and makes the impact of our work more visible. Together, we’re able to make markets more efficient and supportive for local vendors and shoppers.

  1. How long have you used Farm2Facts and have you been positively affected since working with Farm2Facts?

Using Farm2Facts allows us to collect customer surveys, which give us qualitative feedback from shoppers. This data helps us understand what’s working and guides improvements at each market. For example, one market is looking to change location and will use the data insights to support their case. The information we get is invaluable for refining our processes and enhancing market efficiency.

  1. What is the most rewarding part about your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is working with a team of passionate, motivated market managers who are genuinely dedicated to creating positive change. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that our efforts are helping to feed community members and improve access to fresh, local food, a benefit I deeply value and never take for granted. Being part of this collaborative work not only strengthens the markets themselves but also supports the well-being of the entire community.

  1. What keeps you motivated to continue working in this field?

Providing access to fresh food, fostering better communication with farmers, and supporting small businesses keep me motivated. This work directly benefits our community, ensuring they have fresh, local food options while also uplifting local farmers.

  1. What are your goals for future markets?

We aim to keep leveraging the data we’ve collected to make informed changes that benefit vendors and shoppers alike. Expanding initiatives like the Taste It Tent, fostering open communication with vendors, and welcoming more markets into our collaboration are all high priorities. We’re committed to enhancing community support and increasing fresh food accessibility in the future.
